What is engineered wood flooring?
Engineered wood flooring is real hardwood, just made in a smarter way. Instead of one solid piece of wood from top to bottom, it’s built in layers. The top layer is a thin slice of genuine hardwood like oak, hickory, or maple. This is the part you see and feel when you walk on it. Underneath are several layers of high-density plywood or fiberboard stacked in a crisscross pattern for stability.
This construction helps the floor stay flat and strong, even in areas where solid wood might warp or swell. Engineered hardwood is typically available in planks that are prefinished and ready to install. It comes in a wide variety of wood species, colors, widths, and textures—from hand-scraped to smooth, rustic to refined.
So yes, engineered wood flooring is the real deal. It’s not laminate or vinyl. It’s real wood, just engineered for better performance.

Why homeowners love engineered wood floors
There’s a reason engineered wood flooring has become one of the top choices for homeowners across Texas. It offers the natural look of hardwood while giving you more options for where and how you can install it.
Here’s what makes it stand out:
- Moisture resistance: Engineered hardwood flooring handles humidity better than solid wood. That makes it a smart choice for Texas homes where temperatures and humidity can swing.
- Versatile installation: You can install engineered wood floors over concrete, radiant heat systems, or even below-grade areas like finished basements. Solid wood? Not so much.
- Durable and stable: Thanks to its layered core, engineered wood flooring resists warping, cupping, and gapping better than traditional wood floors.
- Wide plank options: If you love the look of wide, long boards, engineered flooring makes it possible. It holds its shape better in wider formats than solid wood.
- Easier to install: Some types of engineered hardwood floors come with click-lock systems or can be glued down. That can cut installation time and costs.
- Eco-friendly choice: Engineered wood uses less slow-growth hardwood per plank than solid wood, making it a more sustainable option.
When to choose engineered hardwood floors over solid wood
So, why not just go with solid hardwood? For many, it still has a strong appeal. But there are some key situations where engineered hardwood flooring really shines:
- Your subfloor is concrete: Solid wood can’t be installed directly over concrete without major prep work, but engineered wood flooring can.
- You want to install it in a basement or lower level: Solid wood expands and contracts too much in these environments, while engineered hardwood flooring handles it better.
- You live in a humid climate: Georgetown summers are no joke. Engineered wood is far more stable in high humidity conditions.
- You’re looking for wider or longer planks: Wide solid wood planks are more prone to movement, while engineered planks are more stable and reliable.
- You need a faster installation: Engineered flooring options can often be floated or glued down quickly, saving time and money.
That doesn’t mean solid hardwood is off the table. It’s still a great option for second-story rooms, dry climates, and folks who love the idea of sanding and refinishing their floors multiple times. But if you want something that’s more forgiving and flexible, engineered wood flooring makes a lot of sense.

Hardwood Care and Maintenance
- Cleaning tips: Clean with a damp cloth immediately in case you spill food or drinks. For tough stains like oil, paint, marker, or cigarette marks, use acetone (nail polish remover) on a white cloth to clean. Wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid leaving any liquid item on the floor.
- Regular cleaning: Sweep, dust, or use a hard floor attachment to vacuum the floor to remove dirt and grit without scratching it.
- Mop the floor: Wipe the floor with a damp mop or cloth but avoid using soap, detergent, oil-soap detergent, or any other liquid cleansing agent. Using those cleaning products could cause swelling, delamination, warping, and joint-line separation.
- R2X: Periodically clean with R2X Hard Surfaces Flooring Cleaner for better results.
- Avoid the following: Don’t use any type of buffing machine. Avoid using oil-based wax, polish, or strong ammoniated or abrasive cleaners. Don’t use steel wool or scouring powder.
- Routine care: For spots like chewing gum or candle wax, harden them with ice and gently remove them with a plastic scraper, such as a credit card. Don’t scratch the flooring in the process. Wipe with a damp cloth.
- Protective mats: Use protective mats on entryways to prevent the collection of dirt, sand, grit, and other substances like oil, driveway sealer, or asphalt on your flooring. Avoid using rubber or foam-backed mats as they may discolor the flooring. Use an approved vinyl rug underlayment to avoid slipping.
- Use floor protectors: Minimize indentations and scratches on the floor by using a floor protector and wide-load leg bases or rollers. The heavier the object is, the wider should be the floor protector.
- Maintain relative humidity level: Maintain normal humidity level at home throughout the year to minimize expansion or contraction of wood. Keep a humidifier during the heating season and an air conditioning system or a dehumidifier during the non-heating season to maintain humidity.
- Avoid sharp objects: Avoid placing sharp objects on the floor. Don’t walk on the floor with stiletto heels, cleats, or spiked golf shoes. Trim the nails of your pet to keep them from scratching the floor.
- Rearrange rugs and furniture: Rearrange rugs and furniture regularly to allow the floor to age and be exposed to UV sunlight evenly. UV sunlight will also help soften the tone of the hardwood in various degrees.
